Spread Firefox Hacked, Again

Broadband Reports points out that Spread Firefox -- A Mozilla Foundation website for the promotion of Firefox -- has been hacked, for the second time:

"The Spread Firefox Team became aware this week that the server hosting Spread Firefox, our community marketing site, has been accessed by unknown remote attackers who attempted to exploit a security vulnerability in TWiki software installed on the server," says the Mozilla Foundation. "We have scanned Spread Firefox servers and at this time do not believe any sensitive data was taken, but as a precautionary measure we have shutdown the site and will be rebuilding the web site from scratch."

SpreadFirefox is set to be back online by the 15th of October.

Opera Gains One Million Users in Two Days

We reported a few days ago Opera dropping ads from their browser, since then the free browser has been downloaded over 1 million times according to a recent press release from Opera. More interestingly perhaps, is the fact the majority of downloads are reported to be from Internet Explorer users.

Google targets IE7

Philipp at Google Blogscoped notes, Google not content with being the default search in Firefox's, targets IE7 users with a nifty prompt. See the screenshot -- posted on Google Blogscoped -- of Google's homepage as seen in IE7 for further explanation.

Opera Drops Ads

Opera -- a cool browser with some unique features (such as page zoom) -- has dropped the ads from its free version. The move has clearly sparked some fresh interest in the established browser which now ranks no. 5 in Technorati's "Top Searches This Hour."

Opera was one of the first (if not the first) to offer tabs and standard-compliance way before firefox was even heard of. Download it from their website.
